Would you like to meet and talk to the protagonists of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648? Or learn what day-to-day life was like for those involved in this historical event?

With the app “PathToPeace Münster” / “PeaceQuestions Münster” on the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, this is exactly what you can do. You will learn, why Münster was chosen as congress town, how many people took part and where they were accommodated. You will find answers to many questions such as: Which powers were involved? And how were safety and order maintained? Or who benefited particularly from the peace treaty?

The app is available as a free download and designed as an augmented reality experience. It is an interactive “re-enactment”, a game of questions and answers between the user and the two actors from the here and now, Carsten and Carolin. The political and diplomatic players and the ambassadors brokering the Peace of Westphalia will also answer your questions. To interact with them, you will need to find the corresponding portraits in the Friedenssaal. Simply follow our instructions and point your smartphone camera at the respective portraits.

The app featuring augmented reality is a user-specific learning channel, that is predominantly tailored to the media preferences of our younger visitors but is also aimed at classic history enthusiasts.

The scientific concept was devised by Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef Jakobi
and Prof. Dr. Alfons Kenkmann, speaker of the work group “1648 – peace dialogues”. Prof. Norbert Nowotsch is responsible for the design concept. The app was realised by Manfred Hendricks of SNT Media Concept GmbH. The Münster-based company Mintellity GmbH did the programming. Carolin Wirth and Carsten Bender are the actors who guide the users through the app.

Embark on a tour of discovery with Carsten, Carolin and major characters from the past and get to know the most important place in Münster: the Friedenssaal. Enjoy!
